Working in Partnership with Families
This statement explains how Leopold Primary School will work with parents and carers as we review and deliver age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education in line with the revised statutory guidance.
Our approach
At Leopold Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality, age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). Our teaching supports pupils to develop healthy relationships, keep themselves safe and prepare for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Our provision is being reviewed in line with the Department for Education's revised statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education, which applies from 1 September 2026.
We recognise that parents and carers are the first educators of their children and that effective RSE is strengthened through a positive partnership between home and school.
Consultation before the summer term
Before RSE lessons are taught in the summer term, we will consult with parents and carers about our RSE provision. Families will receive clear information about what will be taught, when it will be taught and the age-appropriate resources that will be used. Parents and carers will be able to view materials, ask questions and share their views with the school.
We will also explain which elements of Relationships and Health Education are statutory, which aspects are taught through the National Curriculum for Science, and the right of parents and carers to request that their child is withdrawn from non-statutory sex education.
Following consultation, we will review our RSE policy and curriculum so that our provision reflects the revised statutory guidance, the needs of our pupils and the diverse community we serve. Consultation enables families to inform the school's approach; it does not provide a veto over the curriculum.
Through open communication and partnership with families, we aim to ensure that pupils receive RSE in a safe, respectful and supportive environment.
