Prevent
Prevent is at the heart of ensuring that our communities and families are not exploited or groomed into following a path of violent extremism. Prevent is all about safeguarding and supporting those vulnerable to radicalisation, to stop them from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
It is one of the four strands of the government's "CONTEST" counter-terrorism strategy; the other strands are Pursue, Protect and Prepare.
The aim of CONTEST is to reduce the risk to the UK and its citizens and interests overseas from terrorism, so that people can go about their lives freely and with confidence. The Home Office provides full details of the updated CONTEST Strategy.
Reporting a Concern
In Brent, child related safeguarding concerns are referred to the Family Front Door. This includes concerns relating to a child who may be vulnerable to support violent extremism.

Channel
If an individual is assessed to be vulnerable to radicalisation, they may be offered support through the Channel programme.
This is a multi-agency programmes designed to safeguard and support vulnerable individuals at risks of being drawn into terrorism. Channel is run in every local authority in England and Wales and addresses all types of extremism, including extreme right-wing and Islamist-related.

How Prevent works within Brent Council
The government introduced the Prevent statutory duty through the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015. The duty requires local authorities with other professional organisations to consider the need to safeguard people from being drawn into terrorism.
Delivery of Prevent is locally led, and driven by analysis of the threat in communities. Local authorities are among the most vital partners in the strategy for countering terrorism.
We will prioritise strengthening the resilience of local communities to terrorism as they are at the forefront of our response, in particular those where the threat from terrorism and radicalisation is highest.
